Winter Stews Inspired by Exmoor
Slow-cooked comfort, Devon-sourced ingredients, and a little North Coast Café warmth.
Exmoor in winter has a character all of its own. Crisp mornings, windswept hills, the dramatic coastline, and that sense of space you only get here. It’s a landscape that asks for something honest and warming. That spirit is what inspired this year’s Exmoor winter stews at the North Coast Café — bowls handmade by Neal to bring comfort without complication.
Proudly Devon-Sourced, Proudly Handmade
Everything begins with provenance. Each of our meat dishes is made using ingredients from trusted Devon farms, bringing depth, tenderness, and a quality you can taste.
Our vegetarian and vegan options follow the same ethos — thoughtful ingredients, slow-cooked and well-seasoned, offering proper winter comfort whether you eat meat or not.
Winters Stews - Slow-Cooked the Way they Should Be
A good stew needs time. Hours rather than minutes. There are no shortcuts — just slow, gentle cooking that lets vegetables soften, sauces thicken, and flavours deepen naturally. Neal prepares every batch by hand in our kitchen on Queen Street, keeping the focus on balance and warmth.
Whether it’s the richness Guinness brings to Devon chuck steak or the way local ale and barley turn lamb into something rustic and comforting, slow-cooking brings everything together.
The Winter Line-Up
Venison & Red Wine
Devon venison gently cooked with vegetables, herbs, and red wine for a deep, warming flavour.
Pork & Devon Cider
Tender Devon pork with vegetables in a bright, tangy sauce made from Sandford Orchards Dry Cider.
Lamb & Devon Ale
Devon lamb and pearl barley simmered slowly in Bays Brewery Topsail ale for a rustic farmhouse finish.
Steak & Guinness
Devon chuck steak, slow-cooked until tender in a rich, malty Guinness sauce with vegetables and herbs.
The Finishing Touch: Our Herby Scone Topper
New this year is something a little different — the Herby Scone Topper.
Golden, savoury, and baked in-house, it’s made for cracking open and dipping straight into your stew. It’s an easy upgrade on a cold day.
Prefer something more traditional? We also serve freshly buttered bread and a selection of handmade savoury scones.

Created in Lynton, Inspired by Exmoor
These dishes are shaped by the place we call home — the weather, the season, the landscape. Each bowl offers warmth, depth, and comfort, whether you’re coming off the moor, visiting Valley of Rocks, or simply in need of something hearty.
You’ll find all of our Exmoor winter stews at the North Coast Café on our Autumn & Winter Menu — slow-cooked, locally sourced, and made for the season.
